Like many other species of fish, the Lookdown is also able to generate loud grunts with their swim bladder and pharyngeal teeth when it feels threatened.
The Lookdown is naturally a schooling fish. This species of fish is never observed alone; the Lookdown will always be found with at least one other fish.
The Lookdown’s unusual shape allows distinctive maneuverability. The Lookdown fish is quick and able to make sharp turns and dashes in order to catch their food and escape possible predators.
The Lookdown has long filaments from its dorsal fin and anal fin. The first dorsal fin, which is located on the fish’s back, has eight spines. The Lookdown has guanine pigments which make up the Lookdown’s skin. This silvery color reflects light and flashes like a silver mirror. The rest of the fish is extremely compressed while the forehead is blunt. The Lookdown also has a projecting lower jaw.
The long filaments do not appear too long when seen on an adult Lookdown; however, they can appear seaweed-like, thin, and extremely long while the Lookdown is quite young.
Although the Lookdown fish is also known as the threadfin lookdown and bluntnose, it gets its name from its appearance because the fish seems to be looking down its nose as a snobbish, judgmental person would do.

Little is known about their spawning nature.
